Sports and Recreation

Davis and Associates know the importance of background checks with recreational and sporting staff employees.   Daily headlines are proof that the lack of such backgrounds are becoming nightmares for centers and organizations around the US.  Not conducting simple background checks on full-time and volunteer staff could cause your center or organization to be tomorrow's headlines.

To make matters worse, when the media discovers and reports that your program failed to conduct a criminal background check, doubt will forever be cast on what has probably been a professional and prosperous organization.  We all want good employees that are honest and credible.  Still, we know that human characteristics prevail and we cannot judge by looks alone.

In the sporting and recreational business, people commit the same criminal offenses as anywhere else.   Theft, embezzlement and sex crimes are prevalent and gain far more attention due to the presence of children and young adults.  Statistics are clear that sexual predators will often attempt to blend in and work for organizations that cater to young people.

A simple job interview will not usually bring out past offenses, and the lack of a background check could cost your organization millions in law suits if unchecked.

Criminal background checks should also be an integral part of volunteer recruiting and staff hiring for any youth based center or organization.

How important and effective are criminal background checks?  Overall, the best policy for all youth based programs is to screen and, when in doubt, conduct additional background checks before hiring an employee or accepting and placing a member in service with young or other vulnerable individuals.

Failure to fully screen employees and volunteers can lead to problems of nightmarish proportions, especially for the young and other vulnerable persons whom lax program oversight has placed in harm's way.
